SHEEP

HEALTH RULES FOR SHEEP

An “Animal Owner or Caretaker’s Verification of Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship” form must be presented upon arrival at all shows and fairs in Pennsylvania, including out-of-state entries.


1. No sheep showing clinical signs of contagious, infectious or external parasitic disease including foot rot and sore mouth will be admitted to show at the Fulton County Fair.


2. All sheep presented for exhibition must be individually identified by an ear tag or tattoo and this identification must be listed on the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection. Purebred animals must be identified by registry name and number, corresponding to the ear tag or tattoo number. Grade animals must be identified by farm-flock number, corresponding to the ear tag or tattoo number.


3. The flock of origin, including sheep consigned to a show shall be examined by an accredited veterinarian. The veterinarian must prepare the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection and must state on the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection that they examined the whole flock and found no evidence of contagious, infectious, transmittable, or external parasitic disease and no known exposure thereto, and are not subject to any quarantine restriction. The date of the examination must also appear on the health certificate issued by an accredited veterinarian indicating that the entire flock was examined for health within 180 days.


4. IMPORTANT RULE – Certification by the owner and an accredited veterinarian that the identified animal(s) is (are not) known to have been exposed to scrapie.

GUIDELINES FOR SHEEP


1. One animal cannot be entered in multiple classes. Each animal can be shown in only one class (breeding or market).  


2. One animal CANNOT be cross entered in Dept.10 & 11. Exhibitors can do showmanship in either Dept. 10 or 11, not both Depts.


Breeding Sheep: 

Dept. 4 (open) & Dept. 11(youth)


1. Pen of lambs consists of two ram lambs and two ewe lambs.


2. Flock consists of one ram of any age, two ewes, one year and under two years; two ewes under one year.


3. Breeder’s young flock consists of one ram lamb and two ewe lambs, all bred and owned by the exhibitor.


4. A get-of-sire consists of four breeding animals, any age or sex, the get of one sire. The get need not be owned by the exhibitor.


5. Only one entry per exhibitor in group classes. No more than 2 entries / exhibitor for individual classes. 


Market Lambs: 

Dept. 4 (open) & Dept.11 (youth)


1. Lambs exhibited in the open market lamb classes are for exhibition only. They will not be sold during the Fulton County Youth livestock sale.


2. Must be weighed Sunday night in sheep barn. Time will be posted at the barn.
